TNGHT’s the night! Hudson Mohawke and Lunice have joined forces once again to serve up a new EP of manic stadium bangers.
TNGHT's crescent moon is appearing once again from behind heavy clouds. It has been sevel years since Hudson Mohawke (Ross Birchard) and Lunice's (Lunice Fermin Pierre II) prodigious debut which changed the sound of the pop music caught in its wake. The pair of bedroom-producers come super-producers from Glasgow and Montreal and have aligned once again on a record which aims to chew up and spit out every influence in an exhilarating 7 tracks. “TNGHT II" has the wildness turned up. In this, the second epoch, the pair explore new forms: they've collected more equipment, made a couple hits, own bigger speakers, loaded a thousand flutes into FL Studio.
Those who fell for the group all those years back will be pleased to find that TNGHT don’t skimp on the bass and beats here. Cuts like ‘Club Finger’ and ‘Dollaz’ still feature some fever-dream melodies and drums which clatter through the speakers with the force of a rampaging herd of elephants. There’s still plenty on “TNGHT II" that will tear up a club, warehouse party or festival mainstage. However, there is also a sneakily experimental bent to a fair few of these cuts. The sample processing is less predictable here, with the more linear melodies of TNGHT’s previous output jettisoned for jerkier lead-lines or strangely-sliced samples. Furthermore there are some hitherto-unforeseen genre excursions which add strings to TNGHT’s bow - ‘First Body’ is an Arabesque dem-bow cut while ‘I’m In A Hole’ kind of sounds like Johnny Jewel suffering a digital overload.
