Californian musician and producer Stephen Bruner aka Thundercat returns with his fifth studio album “It Is What It Is” for the independent label created by himself and super-producer Flying Lotus, Brainfeeder. An album he says is about “love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that,” this release is packed with his signature bass riffs, unique vocals, powerful lyrics and a stacked lineup of tallented features.
The album explores a broad range of genres and styles. Noticable influeces of electronic, jazz, funk, soul, R&B and hip hop give the album a unique and refreshing sound. Thundercat’s beautifully poppy and complex basslines compliment this selection of styles, adding unmistakable grooves to each track. His vocals compliment the mood of each song, they stretch from emotional and heartfelt on songs like “Fair Chance” to playful and goofy on tracks like “Dragonball Durag,” never losing their charm or missing a note. A lively, honest and fun listen, “It Is What It Is” is unmissable.
