From the moment fans first set eyes on the ghost that walks in his 1936 comic debut, they were captivated by the mysterious costumed crime-fighter. Unlike other superheroes, the Phantom relies entirely on his own natural strength, intelligence and enigmatic immortality. The iconic hero is often credited as the first costumed superhero, being the first to feature white, pupil-less eyes behind their mask.
During the comic's early years, the colour of The Phantom's suit widely varied. In the early stages of the design process, Falk had even considered naming the character "The Grey Ghost" instead of the Phantom, and on numerous occasions throughout the strip had referred to him as "The Grey Ghost". Eventually the idea was abandoned, and Lee Falk, The Phantom's creator, embraced the now iconic purple suit version that was printed and ultimately ceased the reference.
