Of all the terrors to confront the Fellowship of the Ring on their journey, none would compare with the Balrog. A demon of flame and shadow, the creature had lain entombed for countless ages in the deepest darkness, far beneath the Misty Mountains.
Celebrating over 20 years of the Lord of the Rings movies, Weta Workshop are commemorating the event with a brand new series of polystone Middle-earth statues featuring classic characters in their signature poses.
20 years on from Ben Wootten's concept art of the Balrog, Weta Workshop have once more reimagined the epic beast as part of their Classic Series line. Sculpted, designed and touched up by Victor Gully, Steven Saunders and Shaun Bolton, the 12" statue captures the Balrog moments before Gandalf's immortal phrase: "You shall not pass!". The piece has been crafted with meticulous attention to detail, from the fiery effects surrounding the beast to the scaled texturing along its horns, alongside the realistic rocky display base upon which the Balrog wraps its hellish tail.
It takes hundreds of hours to design, sculpt model make, mold, and paint the prototype for each new Middle-earth piece. Whether it be a prop replica, beautiful environment or iconic character, Weta Workshop treat their collectibles with the same level of care and attention to detail that they bring to their film work. Weta Workshop was intrinsically involved in the design and manufacture of physical effects for all three films.
