With politically themed and revolutionary lyrical content packing a punch the music scene was eager for. The album artwork was notable for featuring a graphic photograph of Thích Quảng Đức performing self-immolation.
Rage Against the Machine was a critical success upon release with several critics noting the album's politically motivated agenda and praising Zack de la Rocha's strong vocal delivery. Their ability to fuse rap vocals elements with metal instrumentation created a sound that was new and fresh but carried their politically lead lyrics with pride.
