Prince - Sign "O" The Times 2xLP Vinyl Record (2020 Record Store Day Exclusive Picture Disc)
Sign o’ the Times is probably the most complete exhibition of Prince’s discography. Almost every style he’d attempted up to that point in his career is presented in its most clarified and uninhibited form. It’s also one of the leanest-seeming double albums of all time—not a note across its four sides registers as indulgent or out of place.
The very notion of “place” is a complicated one on Prince’s masterwork; the sessions that produced the record lasted over a full year and were intended for multiple unrealised projects and albums. The songs themselves sometimes hail from even further back in time, closer to the beginnings of Prince’s career, when he was still exploring the slender shadow-space between funk and new wave.

Staff Review:
What better way to gear up for this years Record Store Day than to reflect on one of the finest releases of last years. The record I have today is the picture disc release of Prince’s 1987 “Sign “O” The Times.” To call this album genius feels like an understatement. The double LP doesn’t have a dull moment and might be his boldest artistic statement to date.
Many songs on this album were taken from abandoned projects such as his pitched up alter-ego “Camille” and rejected triple album “Crystal Ball,” though that isn’t to say the songs aren’t fitting, “Sign “O” The Times” remains comprehensive and complex. It features some of Prince’s finest lyricism, throughout the album he lays out his worldview, expressing social and political concerns, singing about life experiences and giving perspective on who he is through explorations of gender, religion and sexual desire.
The sound of the album and Prince’s ability to move between genres is remarkable. As suggested by the title, “Sign “O” The Times” sees Prince reinventing his sound, and he does this through some of the finest pop of the 80s. Even after disbanding the Revolution, the album brilliantly employs Prince's signature sounds of electric rock, pseudo-psychedelic pop, hypnotic funk, soul and R&B alongside his brilliant vocals and unfathomable guitar talent. Amongst this, Prince adapts to upcoming era of hip-hop with lyrical mentions of gangs and drugs as well as elements of production similar to that of Run-DMC.
“Sign “O” The Times” is lively and vibrant, it features Prince’s attitude and undeniable uplifting qualities. Incredibly accomplished, Prince stands as one of the greatest musical talents this world has ever seen. “Sign “O” The Times” is a timeless testament to this and has cemented itself as arguably his finest solo work.
