During the Apollo 11 mission, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down on the moon in their lunar module, Eagle. Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon, followed closely by Aldrin. Meanwhile, Michael Collins stayed in orbit around the moon, piloting the command and service module, Columbia, all by himself while his fellow astronauts explored the surface. They gathered samples to bring back to Earth. The mission was launched using a Saturn V rocket and was the fifth crewed mission of NASA's Apollo program. Armstrong's historic step onto the lunar surface was broadcast live around the world, where he famously said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The astronauts returned to a hero's welcome in the U.S. and globally, receiving many awards and honours for their incredible achievement.
